To support the identification of shark and ray species listed under CITES CoP19, an updated guide has been developed by Dr. Rima Jabado. Together, these guides help trade inspectors, customs officers, and fisheries personnel quickly and accurately identify CITES-regulated shark and ray carcasses and dried products.

These visual identification tools, developed by Dr Debra Abercrombie and Dr Rima Jabado, are designed to help trade inspectors, customs officers, and fisheries personnel quickly and accurately identify CITES-regulated shark products. The toolkit includes three guides covering the identification of whole animals, processed shark trunks (bodies with heads and fins removed) sold for meat, and dried products such as shark fins, sawfish rostra, and manta and devil ray gill plates — items frequently involved in illegal trade.

This identification guide, developed by Dr. Rima Jabado, supports the implementation of CITES Appendix II listings for wedgefish and giant guitarfish species adopted at CoP18.
DNA Manual for Shark Fins and Other Products (2018)
This manual was developed for professional DNA analysts conducting genetic testing of shark fins, meat fillets, and other traded shark products for CITES enforcement. It applies to all shark species listed under the CITES Appendices as of October 2016 (CoP17).
